Guided by the reform and opening-up policy adopted by the Chinese government, through twenty years of rapid development, China has become the world center for leather manufacturing and consumption. The production volume of leather amounted to 0.72 billion sqm, accounting for 1/5 of the total in the world. On the other hand, the manufacturing volume of shoes totaled 10 billion pairs, accounting for more than 1/2 of the world production.
Leather enterprises in China have recently actively participated in the international production and trade cooperation within the leather industry. They have fully presented their competitive advantages in this process.
Leather industry covers tannery, footwear, garments, furs and leather goods and relevant industry includes leather chemicals, machinery, hardware and other accessories. It weights significantly in the export-oriented industry. 50% of the leather and leather products in China are for export purpose, with export volume accounting for 4% of the total in China. The export amount reached 38.5 billion USD in 2007.
According to statistics, there are 6966 enterprises on scale in leather industry, with a total production value of 483.4 billion Yuan. More than 11 million workers are employed in the leather industry and supporting industry. Meanwhile, the industry created 400,000 to 500,000 job opportunities each year, which has made it a competitive industry for absorbing workforce.
